Still, this I will fight for: a future free of fear and a life I wish to live,
This is the life I’ve made for myself, and I want it in a way I haven’t wanted anything else I can remember. It is a wanting that is quiet, and steady, and deep as the beat of my heart.
Of all the ways I could die that I meet with every day, I would much rather die from helping someone.
“Justice is not men beating each other up,” Sage says quietly. “Justice is teaching men that there is a law and, if they don’t abide by it, there is an established punishment.”
“There is justice for the rich here, and justice for the powerful. But for the rest of us, there is very little of anything.”
“I’ve found that acting when you are afraid is the greatest sign of courage there is.”
“It is easier to be strong when you have a friend supporting you,”
having been born to power, it is my responsibility to see it handled well by me, by those who come after me.
“This is justice. Don’t be afraid to look at it.” He smiles as I look at him. “It may not be pretty, but sometimes justice has to be hard to keep the rest of us straight and safe.”
You were fighting back, however you could, with words, with deeds, and there is no fault in that. Not on you, not on anyone who must defend themselves.”
“There’s so much that needs doing,” I tell Sage, my uncertainty bleeding into my voice. “Start somewhere and keep going,” she suggests practically.
