“You can’t even know how much I want to be here with you.”
“We’re still kerosene.” Flammable. Combustible. I smile. “Sounds disastrously right.”
Jane’s dad stands like he owns the world.
“Why are you smiling?” Rose snaps at me. My mouth flattens. “Because I think my girlfriend’s baby pictures are cute.”
“You’ll need to talk to Farrow about details,” Maximoff says. I frown. “Why not you both?” “He’s been dreaming up his wedding since he was a kid. I never thought I’d get married.”
I wanted and want to keep her safe from every cruel thing.
I’m head-deep, un-fucking-believably in love with this girl, and I would do anything for her.
“You keep me on my toes.” He lets out a laugh. “And it’s driving me nuts, and it’s un-fucking-real how much I want you.” “You have me,” I remind him.
“I’m going to match whatever pace you set.”
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that’s right—my boyfriend has a tattoo on his ass. SFO, namely Paul Donnelly, inked script on Thatcher recently, and I wasn’t present. It happened under the cloak of Omega Brotherhood and I just saw the result. They didn’t write “hypocrite” on his butt like I thought they would. Like Thatcher said they could. Instead, SFO decided on something that “better fit” Thatcher. And so they tattooed the word, Cinderella.
First come the bodyguards. I count five. And then five famous faces bring up the rear. Charlie, Beckett, Eliot, Tom, and Ben. Every single one of my brothers. They’re all here, and they’re far too fixated on Thatcher like he’s tonight’s five-course meal.
And Charlie—everyone thinks he has no soul but his is just the darkest, deepest of them all.
He’ll be sixteen this month, on Christmas day, and I’ve been waiting for him to make it there. Because my older brother never did. And if I do anything in my life, Lord, let me have this. Helping Xander live when I couldn’t do the same for Sky.
“Do you think Donnelly is bored? Being on my detail, I mean.” My brows knit, caught off guard. “Why would you even think that?” Xander releases the blind and glances back at me. “Because he used to be Beckett’s bodyguard. And before that, Tom’s. So he’s used to hanging around ballerinas and musicians rather than just sitting inside all day and staring at a wall.” Xander shrugs. “And like I don’t even go to Dalton Academy, so there’s no high school drama he can soak up. I’m just boring, so by process of fucking deduction he’s probably bored.”
But Xander Hale has different demons that he needs us to fight off. It’s why I’m here. What I’m made to do.
“Why are you afraid to love me?”
I’m in another world with Jane. And I never want to leave.
It alarms me, more than anything, that I didn’t call for Maximoff. I called for him. For a man I… I love him.
Aunt Daisy has taught me to use my voice, even if the world says stay quiet. Aunt Lily has taught me fierce courage, even on days when you feel lesser than. And Rose Calloway Cobalt, my mom—she’s taught me how to walk into a room full of men and never back down.
We’re women because we say so. We feel so. And that realization freed me.
“You choose me?” “Oui.” I breathe. “Toujours.” Always.
“All I can promise is that I will love you and respect you, Jane. And I will never abuse your love or take advantage of what you offer me.”
“I’m going to protect you. Sempre toujours.”
“If you need me to shut up—” “Never,” he says deeply, and I’m glad he cut me off there. “Never stop talking, Jane.” He’s my everything and more.
“A home isn’t a house, Jane. It’s the people you love, and by moving, you’re protecting them and you’re protecting yourself.”
“You’re not two halves, Jane. You don’t lose when you love. You gain.” She draws closer to whisper, “You have all of him.”
“All this time, I thought love is a compromise of equals. 50-50. But it’s not…is it?” She leans back and gives me another pointed look. “With the right person, they’ll ensure you’re always whole.”
“I need you. I need you like the air I breathe, and I want you like ground beneath my feet. I’m not afraid—I’m not afraid, not even a little. You are the man who has respected all of who I am and protected every little piece of me.”
“Many people need me, but there are only a handful that I’d drop everything for—and you’re now among them.” He cocked a single brow. “Just so you understand: you rank higher than security, and I would lie for you, if needed.”
