This was my freaking body and I loved the shit out of it. And if I kept telling myself that, maybe one day I’d believe it.
Jules was put out to pasture like an old, crusty cow, and Laura became the sun to his piece-of-crap-no-good-son-of-a—stars. And now they were getting married, having conveniently forgotten where their happily-ever-after started. We met through a mutual friend. It sounded less scandalous the way they told it.
I clenched my fists at my side and my heart did a skitter-patter. She was doing it on purpose: inviting someone she knew could never be my boyfriend, so she could laugh at her silly mistake and rest her hand on his chest, flirting to within an inch of her life with the added bonus of pointing out how silly she’d been for even assuming.
“Well, not all of the cookies.” Nix bumped her shoulder. “I only stole a few out of there. I didn’t hear any complaints when you wolfed down all but a half of one I rescued from that non-stop chewing machine you call a mouth.”
Berk may not see me as an option, but I didn’t want him to see my mother and sister turn me into a victim, and they had a nasty habit of turning me into their whipping post whenever we got together.
Berk shoved his head into the back of the taxi. “You said extra treats? I’m starving.” He had a twizzler dangling out of the side of his mouth. “How can you be starving? You’re actively chewing.” I nudged him out of the way with my feet.
Sprinting in full pads and going straight to the lineup was what I got for rescuing Alexis last night. The second time this week. This time she’d found herself stranded an hour outside the city at some house party in Jersey.
“Sure, you can let go of Jules. My date.” “Jules?! Her name is Julia,” Chet snapped. “My mistake, I just go with what I call her in bed at night.”
but that’s not to say I didn’t appreciate Jules’ quiet beauty. The kind you found yourself sneaking a glance of when she smiled because it was so completely pure and unworried about being anything other than real.
“If there’s anyone who should feel self-conscious, it’s all those other chicks who’ve got absolutely nothing on you in the breast department. KFC is going to burst in here and haul you away.”
“Of course you’d know your way into a man’s stomach.” Her mom’s wavy blonde hair bounced as she laughed. Jules shrank under my hold. “She’s a fantastic baker. One of the best bakeries in the city is bringing her on for a special project.” “Julia has always loved the kitchen. And food. Good thing he looks strong.” Her mom spoke to Jules while patting me on the chest.
I wiped at my eyes, so sick of letting my family do this to me.
“If you’re trying to hide, the glittering, sparkly dress isn’t exactly stealthy. I think that’s why the military went with camo over sequins.”
“Don’t ever let anyone else make you feel like you’re not awesome.”
In a matter of days, Jules had gone from someone I looked forward to seeing every day, to someone I needed to see. I needed to make her laugh and make sure she was okay. And I wanted her to want that of me too.
“He’s my friend.” “Not from the way he’s checking out your ass, he isn’t.” She lifted an eyebrow with a wide smile.
“If it still needs interpretation, maybe I should be a bit clearer.” I ran my finger under her chin. Her gaze lifted away from the box to meet mine. “Clearer?”
It feels like there wasn’t much build up to this point. I thought he was dead set on finding the letter girl and he had only just realized that he found Jules attractive. This just seems like a big leap
“Your lips make me forget about everything else. They make me forget about losing, about the hundred people in the hallway beside us, about anything not centered on this mouth. How’d you get so fucking sweet, Jules?”
We were doing things backward, but I was determined to do this right with her. Show her this wasn’t some bang and run thing. She’d told me before she wanted casual, but I wasn’t a casual guy,
I feel like I’m missing something. When did she say this? I know she also referenced it earlier but I seriously don’t remember her ever saying that.
Alexis smile dropped and she peered inside. “You brought her?” “She offered to come along, and she’s got some weather appropriate clothes for you.” With a grim look, she slid into the backseat of the car and I closed the door.
LJ always went straight to Alexis whenever anything went wrong. If it was me being late somewhere or something going missing, his knee-jerk conclusion was always Alexis, but that wasn’t the case—well, maybe fifty percent of the time.
“How many times do I have to tell you, Jules. I’m into you. Whether it’s in letter form, cookie form, pole dancing form, sitting in your sweats on the couch watching TV form, or any other way you want to show me what you’re all about, I’m here for it. I’m here for you.”
Mom stood. “I’ll try on my gown and then we can go get lunch.” “I’ve got to go to my internship.” “The invitation wasn’t an open one. You should be watching your weight, anyway.” And with that little nugget of preciousness, Mom swanned out of the room.
“You have no idea what it’s like to have no one. To have nothing. Absolutely nothing.” “I’ve lost things.” My vision blurred with unshed tears. “I’ve lost people I care about.” “To death. They didn’t choose to throw you away like garbage.”
Okay but not having anyone and having someone abandon on you are two different situations. Jules does know what it’s like to not have anyone with the way her mom and sister treat her.
“I’m so sorry, Jules. I didn’t mean that. It was a knee-jerk reaction.” She petted my hand, keeping her vise grip on me, so I couldn’t get away. “In reality, I’ve always been jealous of you.”
God not this. I hate the whole ‘I’ve always been jealous of you that’s why I treated you like the dirt on my shoe’ trope
“And you were never the third best thing in my life, Jules. Never. I’d never play a game again, if it meant I could be here with you.”
