“Is this a joke?” He came down two steps. “I’ve been working on my flexibility; would you like to put it to the test? Who in the hell?”
“Berk’s not—” “Sure, I’m always up for a party.” He shrugged and nodded.
An offended gasp shot from his mouth. “Who else have you been giving away your treats to?”
“Can I help you?” “Sure, you can let go of Jules. My date.” “Jules?! Her name is Julia,” Chet snapped. “My mistake, I just go with what I call her in bed at night.”
“In case I didn’t tell you already. That dress looks killer on you.”
“Mercy. I’m calling it.” I braced my hands on my knees, stopping in the center of the path. “You’re worse than Coach.” She skidded to a stop a few paces in front of me. “Oh thank god.” She flung herself on the grassy slope beside us. “I was trying to keep up with you.” Her arms were draped over her face, smooshing her fogged up glasses. “I’m about twenty seconds from my heart bursting out of my chest. Jesus, I felt like you could’ve gone on forever.”
Deflect, hide, run. That was how I handled uncomfortable situations. Run for cover if at all possible.
Tomorrow, we had class together. Excitement coursed through my veins. The same kind I got before one of my games. Tomorrow, I wouldn’t be the dude who “happened” to be outside at the exact same time she was coming home, or used cookies as an excuse to hang out. Who does that? Me, apparently, I can’t help myself.
I might just need to make a pit stop at a certain bakery later today. And it was somewhere she couldn’t run away from me.
“It’s got its ups and downs, but if you’re solid, there’s nothing to worry about. Are you and Jules solid?” I shoved my hands into my pockets. “We’re not together.” “But you’d like to be.” His knowing look told me I wasn’t exactly stealthy about my feelings, which made it even harder that Jules ran every chance she got.
I dropped my head against my head rest, letting out a growl of frustration. Was I going to have to paddle a boat out into the center of the Schuylkill River to get a second alone with her? Universe—this joke isn’t anywhere near funny.
Jules shot up from her desk. “He was buying me tampons!”
“See, super heavy duty.”
There were light freckles across the bridge of her nose. The ones I’d first seen in the greenhouse and kept discovering new ones. Tiny little footprints across the tops of her cheeks. I wanted to know everything else about her I hadn’t seen yet. What else was there to discover about Jules? I wanted to write the encyclopedia.
“If it still needs interpretation, maybe I should be a bit clearer.” I ran my finger under her chin. Her gaze lifted away from the box to meet mine. “Clearer?” “Much.”
A small gasp shot from her lips and I couldn’t hold back my smile. I was filled with the feeling that made you forget everything else and want to bottle up that single moment of pure, unrelenting and unparalleled joy. “Much.” And I wasn’t taking any chances this time. Voices rang out against the concrete around us. Players, coaches, and everyone else in this gridiron circus flowed past us, past our little island in the middle of madness. But I couldn’t hold it back any longer; like a dam in a torrential rain storm, I was overwhelmed by her. And kissed the shit out of her.
Fingers wrapped around my thigh, giving me a squeeze every couple of minutes like a reassurance that he was there. Like he was saying, ‘yes, I am touching your leg, and I plan on touching a whole lot more of you in the future.’
