“If you ever scare me again like that again, I will hunt you down and fucking kill you myself. You got it, lieutenant?”
“I know I’ve been tough on you, and I know what you think. But I’ve never been ashamed of who you are, Grant. You’re my son, and I just…” He seemed to lose his words and swallowed before meeting my eyes. “I don’t want things to be harder for you. That’s all.”
“I see a man I wasn’t looking for. A man I didn’t even know was there, until right now. And Solo?” “Yeah?” “I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be than sitting with him in this car right now, holding his hand.”
“What the hell happened to you up there in that plane?” I nipped at his lower lip, and when Solo moaned and opened for me, I whispered, “I realized what’s important.”
“Like you said, I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be than sitting in this car, sharing this meal, with a man I never knew I was looking for until today.”
“Do you still feel that way now?” “Reckless?” Panther raised an eyebrow at my purposeful misdirection. “That no one cares.” Those piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into mine, searching for the truth, and I knew if I tried to fabricate a lie, he’d see right through it. “I think you might.” When Panther said nothing, I added, “Maybe.”
“Well, you know where the door is. If you want to leave, leave. I’m not making you stay.” And damn it, even as every instinct in my body said to get up and get out, I rolled to my back and said, “But how would I know you were okay?”
“Mateo?” “Hmm?” “I don’t do this either.” When Solo held my stare, I added, “Ever. This thing between us, I never thought it would be more than sex.”
“Don’t try to deny it. You’ve said this was a bad idea from the beginning.” “It is a bad idea.” “But you still wanna play with fire, huh?” I brought our hands up to my mouth and sucked his index finger between my lips, teasing just enough that embers smoldered in Solo’s eyes. “I want to play with you.”
“The only thing I would regret tomorrow morning was if I woke up and you weren’t there.”
No attachments. No letting anyone in close. That was the way I’d lived my life for years now, and somehow in the course of a few weeks Panther had weaseled his way into my mind, and damn if I didn’t mind him being there.
“We need someone more than fearless. Someone you can fly with that can help you snap out of any anxiety you’re feeling. Someone like…” Oh God. He’s gonna say it. “…Solo.”
“It doesn’t matter.” “It matters to me.”
Panther gave me a small smile and looked down at our entwined hands. “You’re a nightmare sometimes. You really are. And I know that’s what you want everyone to think of you because it makes it easier to not get hurt. I get that. But just so you know, I really like the guy behind the mask. And sometimes, I think he likes me too.”
