“But after a while, I saw how Orion coveted you. How he hadn’t made you bad at all, you’d made him good. And I realised it wasn’t just some fling. The way you two looked at each other it was like…like an unbreakable thread was binding you together. Nothing anyone said or did would ever change it. Least of all me. And that was when I realised what I’d done. How I’d tried to tear you to pieces, tried to make out as if, somewhere deep down, you were as bad as me when all I was really doing was ignoring the fact that I’d become the monster I’d tried so hard to find in you.”
“There’s one more thing I should have realised. You could never be my mate, Darcy Vega. Because we’re not equals. You’re far better than me in every way imaginable.”
“You cost me the love of my life,” I said in a calm but dangerous voice. “He’s in prison because you couldn’t wait to destroy me the second you got the chance. And all over a Wolf I never laid a hand on. Do you understand what that makes you to me?”
“No, it makes you nothing,” I growled. “Just a worthless, waste of oxygen who I now no longer acknowledge as existing.”
“I’m not your baby,” Seth said coldly. “Haven’t been for a long fucking time. And even when I was, I wasn’t just yours. Never have been. I made it clear I fuck around. I don’t settle with one person until I find my mate. But you just kept denying it to yourself until I stopped correcting you.”
“You will not see her, hear her, or even smell the sickly-sweet perfume she wears to hide the scent of evil on her,” I spoke clearly, my voice ringing around The Orb and Tory let out a little laugh of triumph. “That goes for anyone who supports the Heirs too,” Seth suddenly boomed
“If anyone is seen with her, they’ll get the same treatment. She is officially nothing,” Darius took over, a hungry glimmer of vengeance in his eyes.
“You can’t ever let Gabriel, or the girls know who is keeping them safe,” our mother sniffed. “If they find out who you are while you’re still alive, fate will twist, and they’ll be killed. I’ve seen it. They can never find out-”
“I was alone in the world for so long that I gave up on ever uncovering the mysteries of my past,” he breathed. “I found happiness in creating my own family…but now… I remember. The visions broke the block on my memories, and I remember my mother, your father… I remember holding the two of you on the day you were born and promising to love and protect you until the day I died.”
“If he thinks you’ve moved on, he might start listening to me. And in time…maybe I can get him to agree to the appeal.”
“Nobody fucks with my girl and gets away with it,” he growled, his lips brushing my ear for a moment and making me shiver.
“Why should we have to listen to the stars?”
“Fuck fate,” Darius agreed darkly.
I knew his brother outside of this place, but that apparently didn’t make us friends by any stretch of the imagination.
I could never show her an ounce of warmth again. Never give her hope for us. Because she needed to move on from me and live the life she was meant to before I’d ever come along to fuck it up.
“For someone who’s complaining, you sound pretty damn happy about all of that,” I commented. “I’m ecstatic,” Seth agreed with a wolfy grin. “The Vegas might be a total pain in our asses, but life has been so much more interesting since they came along.”
“What did you get for him?” Seth called and I growled at him irritably. “Can’t you be the kind of chaperones who just shut the fuck up and look at the wall or something?” I snapped. “No chance,” Max called back.
The Dragon in me rose to the surface of my skin as I instantly recognised the value of it, and I had to work damn hard not to snatch it and growl mine at the whole room.
“Because once it’s living in you, it will work like it does for me. No one will be able to influence your mind. Not even-” “This can stop my father from Dark Coercing me?” I breathed as my heart stumbled over itself. “Yeah. At least, it should do, if I made it right…” Roxy gave me a shy kind of smile
“You set me free,” I breathed, staring at Roxy like she was some kind of mythical creature given flesh as I tried to figure out what the hell I could ever do to repay this. She’d just answered every wish I’d ever begged of the stars with a smile pulling at her lips and was offering me up a shrug in return like it was nothing.
“I get it,” I said as I stepped closer to her. So close that we were almost touching. “I understand why you made the choice you did. Forever is a hell of a long time to give to someone you don’t trust. But what if forever was just a day? What if all we had was today and the clock was ticking down to midnight? What if giving yourself to me meant just that? Being mine until the strike of midnight. Would you be mine forever then?”
and realised I’d actually just willingly drunk something an Heir had given me. Holy shit, when did I start trusting Max Rigel?
“Everyone’s coming?” I breathed in surprise as I climbed onto the window ledge. “Of course they are,” Darius
“You will scream for me, Roxanya,” he promised
A roar burst from my lips as he fought to shield himself and I spotted the blood coating her skin, the words burned into her flesh countless times. Acrux. His name. My name. Decorating her perfect skin in red.
“I can’t stop it,” I gasped, my heart drumming to a powerful beat. “Get away from me.” “Fuck,” Seth spat,
Darius was savage, brutal, vicious, broken and mine. And in that moment, I had no desire for the darkness in him to ever let up. I wanted him. Every damaged, depraved, dirty piece of his soul was made to fit with all the twisted, ruined parts of my own. And if the stars didn’t like it then I’d happily climb up into the sky and tear them all down for him. Right after I watched him kill his father.
My Phoenix reared her head and the fire burned brighter, hotter, my head falling back so I was forced to look up at the stars, the entire heavens seeming to ignite above me.
Did I do okay? Was I good friend?” he asked, a tear rolling free of his eye. “You’re the best friend, Diego,” I promised, and a smile pulled up the corner of his mouth ever-so-slightly. “You always felt like…home,” he said on a guttural breath, then he fell horribly still, his eyes fixed on the stars above as they reflected in their glassy surface.
“I’m sorry,” I sobbed as he held me. “It’s not your fault,” he swore, clutching me tighter. “I’m so glad you’re okay,” I said breathlessly, and he nuzzled into my head. “You too,” he whispered against my cheek as more tears escaped me.
The blade of ice fell from my hand where it began to melt into a puddle of nothing on the floor along with all of my hopes and dreams.
“The world means nothing to me without her,” I spat at him,
