“While I’m here, you will never be alone.” She gently squeezed his hand.
“What’s wrong with your foot?” Gemma froze. The voice was low and hoarse, the words measured and pronounced with a liquid, flowing inflection. Slowly, she straightened from her bent position, the boot untied. “Simon?” She sounded hoarse herself as she looked at him.
“How many of your hearts are beating?” she asked, to distract herself from the impulse. “Three.” She smiled wider, lost in the moment. “Are you angry?” “All that wasted yogurt? I’m livid.”
“Run away with me now.” The tight roll of suppressed emotions within Gemma threatened to burst. She gripped the chair handles tighter. “I have nowhere to go.”
“Why do you always say words that make no sense?” he chided gently. “What future is there except you and me? Us?”
“You have to try harder. Please, Gemma. Do it for me. Just this one time. That’s all I’m asking. Save my world, open this goddamn door!”
“Stay strong for me, Gemma.” “I’m trying, Simon,” she managed through the throat so tight it threatened to choke her. “I won’t leave Earth without you.”
“Tell me the truth, Gemma. Are you afraid of me?” his liquid voice caressed. “Terrified,” she confessed.
“Maybe you’re right,” she admitted. “Maybe there wasn’t a choice for me, either. Because every time I feel afraid and start having regrets, I think back to what happened and analyze what I could've done differently. And I can come up with nothing. If time rolled back and I had to do it all over again, I’d still choose you.”
“Do it, Simon. There’s nothing left for us here. If we have to die, let’s die fighting, not sitting here waiting for the air to run out. It is a chance, and by God I want you to take a stab at it. We’ve come so far. Don’t give up on us now!”
