He’s always reminded me a little of a golden retriever—a smiling, floppy mess of sandy hair and freckles. Sometimes I swear I can see him wagging his tail.
“You are a beautiful unicorn princess,”
feel lots of things,” he says, and I can sense that he’s getting agitated. “You have no fucking idea.”
“I love them,” I say, the words like a sigh. I love him. All I want is for him to think I’m as cool as he is, because he is so cool, and beautiful, and terrifying. James Dean is magic.
“Or do I pretend to be too full so you can have some?” He raises an eyebrow at
“You’ll be fine. Beautiful unicorn princess, remember?” “I’m a lying, idiot princess.” “Well, at least you’re still a princess,” she answers. “That counts for something. Just ask him, okay?”
“You’re a giraffe.” “What, why?” I ask. “I’m so short.” “I know,” he says. “But giraffes are my favorite.” He smiles at me, his mouth full of peanut butter. I smile back, oddly flattered by the compliment.
“Keely,” he whispers again, his voice so soft I can barely make it out. “You drive me crazy.”
“If he doesn’t have the common decency to at least walk up and ring the doorbell . . .” he grumbles, heading to the door. I scamper after him. “Andrew, wait!”
“I tell them! I tell them all that I don’t want anything serious.” I don’t know why I’m pressing him. It’s like I’m picking at a scab. “But why?” “Because I’m already in love with someone!”
The feelings I had for him feel silly all of a sudden—how could I have been so into Dean when Andrew was right in front of me the whole time?
“A virgin?” Sophie finishes. “Yeah. It’s no big deal. I’m just not ready yet. I’d rather wait until I know someone loves me, you know? The guys at this school aren’t worth it.”
“You’re not weak. You’re in love.” “Sometimes I think it’s the same thing.”
It’s not a race, Andrew said, and he’s right. Except right now, as I careen out of the elevator and run through the lobby to find him, it kind of is.
“Say it,” he says, and he kisses me again quickly, the hope sparkling in his eyes giving me courage. “Come on, Keely, say it.”
“Are you kidding?” he says. “Keely, I’m so stupidly in love with you.” He leans closer to me so our noses are touching. “I’ve been in love with you since middle school.”
