According to recent reports, in the Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and North Africa, more than 70 percent of children aged two to fourteen years are disciplined in a violent manner. In some countries—like Yemen, Tunisia, Palestine, Egypt—over 90 percent of children report being violently abused.

“So? Do you think that you know more than Allah’s prophet? Who are you to question his actions?” “Was he a pedophile?” “No! Of course not! He only had sex with her after she became a woman. After she got her period. Before that, he only did other things with her, to prepare her. So she would be comfortable with him when the day came. Subhanallah, Allah’s messenger was always thoughtful and considerate like that.”

In her depressed and confused state, the simplicity and order of Islam must have been so enticing. It offers a structure that is so rigid it outlines how you should cut your fingernails. There is a precise order in which to cut them, followed by a specific manner in which to dispose of the clippings.

“Don’t laugh like that. You’re a girl!” “Don’t sit like that. You’re a girl!” “Lower your voice. You’re a girl!” “Lower your eyes. You’re a girl!” Girls are not ever allowed to look a man in the eyes. We have to keep our heads lowered like a dog to be reminded of our place as lesser than. It was endless. The word for shame was snapped at me in a loud whisper thousands of times throughout my childhood. “Eib! Eib!” It was the only word I heard more often than haram.

The statistics for how common this kind of abuse is in Muslim-majority countries is truly sickening. High-profile cases, like that of Zainab Ansari, a six-year-old girl in Pakistan whose body was dumped in a pile of garbage after she had been raped and murdered, have forced the international community to take notice.

It is unfortunate that rather than celebrate the voices of dissidents in their communities, people who risk their safety to call for love, acceptance, and harmony, the West props up Muslim antisemites who just fulfill the stereotype.

A common response from people is that hijab is “cultural clothing.” But which culture are they referring to? Women in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and Indonesia share no cultural aspects. They do not have similar food or clothing or traditions or language. The only thing they share is religion. Hijab is worn by women in all those countries because of the religion of Islam, not because of any culture. Claiming the hijab is cultural clothing is as vacuous as claiming a Pope hat is cultural.

The direct response to that would be to have a day where we encouraged Muslim women to take off their hijab for a day, but of course we could not do that. Girls and women can be killed for removing their hijabs. Aqsa Parvez, a sixteen year old girl in Canada, was strangled to death by her father and brother with the hijab that she refused to wear.

Of course, all of these people are punished for their crimes against Sharia. Either they are punished by their families in what is referred to as honour violence or honour killings or they are punished by their governments that imprison them for decades for defying the laws created to maintain modesty.

The judge ruled that corporal punishment wasn’t against the law in Canada, and due to our “culture,” sometimes those punishments can be more severe than in the average Canadian household. The scariest thought crouching in the back of my mind became a reality with one swift smack of a judge’s gavel.

People that have devoted their lives to protecting children are being forced to actively leave children to continue to be abused because their government is hell-bent on cultural and moral relativism. The need to seem woke supersedes the need to save actual children from abuse.

In their effort to be “culturally sensitive,” my own country ended up being viciously bigoted toward me instead. I knew that if I had come from a family of “white” parents, I would have been protected. This is the typical result of regressive-left thinking, when their minds are so open, their brains fall out. They only see the skin colour or the ethnicity of the perpetrator, not the acts they commit.

Many years later when I got involved in activism, I noticed a very common thread. A lot of us girls had been psychologically abused by our mothers. A woman who has no control over her life, craves control. There are very few outlets where that control is acceptable. In her immediate family, she cannot exert control over her husband or her son, but her daughter is fair game. All of her aggressions and frustrations are released in that one direction.

That is the mind-set of Muslims in a nutshell: I don’t need to learn the truth—I already know it. I don’t need to read the ingredients. I don’t need to read science books. I don’t need to learn anything more—I already know. And once you think you know, there’s no desire to learn anything further.

It is so common, in fact, that in Morocco a popular daytime show had a segment on how women can apply makeup to cover their black eye. It is not against the law in most Islamic countries, because no human can forbid something that Allah has allowed. In Egypt there are debates on television where women try to say that men should not beat their wives, but they are quickly superseded by the Quran verse 4:34.

Both Islamists and jihadis have the same goal—to spread Islam, but they have different methods. Islamists want to do this through passive means such as politics, immigration, and childbirth. However, jihadis prefer the method used by the first Muslims: the sword. There is a hadith in which Mohammed says that the best Muslims are his generation, and then Muslims get successively weaker as time goes by.

“I won’t risk leaving you alive to leave Islam. I will kill you before that happens. You will not drag me down to Hell with you.” She believed that she needed to kill me to save her soul. According to her religion, she saw no other choice. If she raised a daughter who became an apostate, then she would be punished for eternity. It would be her fault. Allah would punish her for it. She had to kill me to make sure that never happened.
