My heart pounds. I take his hand. He pulls me to my feet. “Would you sit with me for a time?” he says. “I will call for a proper meal.”

“I really missed you, Scary Grey.” “And I you.” I offer half a smile. “But I am no longer scary.” She leans in. “You’ll never not be scary.” For a fleeting moment, I wonder what it would feel like to trace a finger along her skin.

“When Lilith told you the truth … why did you run? Why did you leave?” “Karis Luran had already spread doubt, the first day she came to Ironrose. I knew my existence would threaten the line of succession.” I pause. “I thought it would be easier if everyone thought I was dead.” He’s quiet for a while. “Does this seem easier, Grey?”

“Is a town close? I could go, too,” I offer. “We could pretend to be a married couple traveling together.” Grey’s dark eyes find mine.

Then she drops to her knees. I suck in a breath, but a man behind her does the same. Then another. A murmur runs through the crowd, and they all begin to kneel.

“The innkeeper has left a carafe of wine.” He shakes his head. “Wine will have me on the floor.” I smile and pick up the pitcher of water instead. This might be the most surprising thing I have discovered about him. “Truly?” He nods and accepts the glass of water.

“I will guard your door.” “I should not trouble you to—” “I may not want to be king, but I know how to be a guard.” He brushes a finger along my jaw. “Fear not. No one will touch you again.”

Without warning, his hands fist in my shirt, and he jerks me up. I cough and gasp for breath. “A day,” he says viciously. “Half an—” He shoves me underwater again, and this time I distantly register Lia Mara and Tycho shouting at him.

STOP THE VIOLENCE

Luckily I spent years serving the royal family of Emberfall. I spent an eternity serving Rhen. She can try her best, but I doubt she’d come close to the nonsense I’ve endured.
