“Say it again.” My voice has gone husky. “Fell siralla.” Her fingers have gone slack on my wrist. I brush a thumb across her lower lip, and her mouth parts slightly. I find myself wondering what the line of her jaw feels like. The slope of her cheek. The curve of her ear.
“He wasn’t your friend, Grey. He had an eternity to be your friend, and he wasn’t.
I blush. “I would still try.” “I know you would. That is why you need the lesson on kindness and vulnerability so very badly.”
Then I pull my book free and begin to read, ever grateful for stories about other people and their adventures.
“Ah, yes, the most dangerous person at the party is always the girl sitting alone with a book.”
“Choices are never easy. There are good and bad options, but the most dangerous is to not make any choice at all.”
“Visiting a prisoner, as you once did for me.”
Especially when my thoughts also remind me of the brief moments after, when I hope you were not cold at all.
“If you leap from this window, the best I can offer is a slower descent toward death.”
Iisak is watching me. “Shall I tell him anything?” Emotion grips my throat again. I straighten my robes and refuse to allow any further tears to fall. “Tell him to be a great king.”
“Trust me, you have her attention.” He catches my waist, pulling me still, pulling me close. His dark eyes bore into mine. “Do I have yours?”
There is no path here. I feel as though the curse never ended. The players simply changed.
“We loved you, too,” he says. I clench my eyes shut. A tear slips free. “I know. And I loved you both as well.”
As my eyes lift, I find his men first. His friends. My friends. They have Iisak on a chain. Tycho looks even better in trim armor than he did in palace finery. His face is full of anguish. Noah looks disgusted. Jake looks like he wants to take on the entire army to stop this. And Grey.
Her face is shining, though, and she laughs each time. It’s the lightest I’ve ever seen her. For the first time, there are no expectations for her to fulfill. She can just be a girl who loves her sister.
