In a rush of anxiety, Zoey raised her hand and waved clumsily. “Um… hi?” The optans exchanged inquisitive glances and raised their hands to imitate Zoey’s gesture.
the optans managed to squeeze their tech and mingle it with desks and filing cabinets in what looked like Chef Miguel’s 24 karat gold leaf on pepperoni pizza.
“I’m not sure you’re really ready for your ‘no more lies’ policy.”
“Must be hard for you, not being able to see him all evil nor all good but most of us aren’t.”
“Etienne’s little party trick shattered part of his shoulder, clavicle and jaw, so Jasper is now in an induced coma.” She sensed Zoey getting tense and turned to her. “He’s fine, the crew got there just in time and he was attended immediately. He’s just hours away from a full recovery.”
“How do you greet each other?” Strangely enough, he was still holding her hand. “With a most ordinary nod, I’m afraid. No handshake, no peck on the cheek—I found that particularly cute here. I haven’t had the full integration course on human interaction, just the pure basics—hopefully, enough so that you won’t label me as the office weirdo.”
“James said you were going to retreat your crew from Earth, causing us to be exposed without your, um… help.” She wasn’t really sure how a twenty-four year old human should carry a conversation over the safety and future of her home planet with an alien official, but that was that.
Snatching someone’s body and mind away from them still felt like psychological rape.
“I’m not really authorized to leave the premises at this time, but…” he brought his hand forward, revealing a Snickers bar and two snowdrops. “It is Valentine’s Day and Google tells me flowers and chocolate are in order.”
Google says caffeine and cold showers, so everyone to their rooms and I’ll have coffee waiting for you downstairs.”
The beauty of democracy: ignoring the gut feeling but doing what would benefit the overall situation.
Jasper was now in his ambassador gear, the dark blue uniform coming together on his body under a metallic glow, and with that thought in mind, his superhero name blossomed in her head like a spring onion no less—Captain Waistcoat.
Portalling never felt like a walk in the park; it was more along the lines of someone shoving her insides in a blender at full speed and flipping that blender upside down for the pressure to be off as well.
