When he kissed my cheek, his lips lingered a beat too long. I pressed my eyes closed and wondered what it would feel like to really love him. To feel fire within my bones whenever he was near. There were spells for that.
When he finally noticed me, I almost missed a step. His eyes were spun gold, the loveliest I’d ever seen. I told Fate right then and there that if it was him, I refused to do his bidding tonight.
“I’m not near him right now.” “Are you sure of that?” he asked gently.
He held me for a long moment and finally relaxed his hold on me. The room’s cool air rushed around me, chilling what he’d made warm. Then I remembered where we were and what had transpired, and the weight of the world returned all too suddenly.
All I knew was that something in him was mine, and something in me belonged to him. I couldn’t let anyone snuff that out. That was all I could think of. All that mattered.
