It reminded me of the potential of working-class solidarity, and how tragically those bonds have been continually undermined by people in power, how the presence of black people has been spun into a threat rather than an opportunity to strengthen working-class culture.
Racism and prejudice are cages – a prison sentence alienating those who hold these attitudes from the beautiful diversity of the world – and I pity people with those afflictions.
Creating important art back then and – more importantly – at the same time holding on to your integrity was an expensive pursuit, unless you let it destroy you, like it did so many black artists throughout the years.
Even though I couldn’t keep abreast of all that was being said, I understood the generic rehearsed political intonations and cadences devoid of true empathy.
