對九歲孩童來說,近日節律會讓他們在晚上九點左右開始想睡,有部分是受到褪黑激素量在此時上升的驅動。然而同一個人到了十六歲的時候,近日節律已經發生劇烈的變化,褪黑激素上升以及夜間睡眠指令,還要好幾個小時才會來到。因此對十六歲的人來說,晚上九點時大多絲毫沒有睡意,反而仍處於清醒的高峰。當父母已經感到疲倦,也就是近日節律進入下降階段、褪黑激素釋放指示睡眠到來,這時大約是晚上十點或十一點,家中的青少年卻仍十分清醒。還要再過數小時,青少年的腦才開始降低清醒度,睡眠才會開始。
