Helen winced. “Oh. Ignore me. I shouldn’t have said that. Never curse, children. Understood?” They nodded, but Linus could already see Lucy mouthing daft little bitch in glee.
“I’m just one person. I’m just me.” “I know. And what a lovely person you are.”
They laughed on this day. Oh, how they laughed. Even though Linus thought his heart was breaking, he laughed until there were tears in his eyes, until he was sure his sides would split. As the sun began to set and the lanterns grew brighter, they laughed and laughed and laughed.
It was raining. He’d forgotten his umbrella inside. He turned his face toward the gray sky and laughed and laughed and laughed.
