It was the type of place where the rent was cheap, and the owners didn't do background checks, so anyone could live here, even if they had a record. Growing up, I had been taught to ride my bike on the other side of the street and to never talk to anyone here. All us kids were terrified of the people living there. There would always be these men standing outside on the grass, with big dogs that would growl at you when you passed them.
I looked at the small woman in front of me, then felt like hugging her, yet slapping her at the same time. No one should have to live a life like this. Not the child who had no choice, not the mother who suffered abuse every day. Patricia saw it on my face. She looked shameful.
