Now, I only wanted to lean on myself, because I was the only one I could depend on to not let me fall.
“It really should be illegal for one woman to be this cute.”
“Have you seen you?” Her eyes met mine then. “You’re beautiful, Gemma.
But before he could lean in to seal the deal, a hand wrapped around my waist from behind, yanking me in the opposite direction. I didn’t have time to process it all — the hand sliding into my hair, the other arm pulling me flush against his body, the crowd going wild. No, I didn’t realize any of it was happening — not until my hands were fisted in his jersey, my mouth opening more to let his tongue inside, a moan rumbling up my throat at the feel of such a passionate, possessive kiss. But it wasn’t Ben’s lips on mine. It was Zach’s.
“I want her. I want to fight for her.”
“You’ll never know what happiness you could have with him if you don’t take the risk of being hurt, Gemma.”
“Stop talking about other guys before I lose my damn mind again.” “Make me,” she challenged, one brow arching. And so I did.
“Marry me.” She laughed, hiccuping again. “Throw the damn ball, Bowen.”
I wanted everyone I loved to meet her.
Because for the first time in a long time, I was happy — truly happy — and she was the reason why.
Well, at least you tried. And at least you got to feel the kind of love most people dream about. At least, for even a few short steps in this life, you got to have someone walking beside you — someone holding your hand and caring whether or not you’re okay.” She swallowed. “That alone is worth the risk.”
I wanted to hold her hand and love her through it all. I wanted to be a part of her healing, let her know she didn’t have to go at it alone.
It was Zach. He was here. And he was dressed up like a hot dog.
“I haven’t been able to think about anything but you, Gemma. Not since the very night we met.”
Because if I was in his arms, I was always winning.
