“A pastry isn’t worth eating if you can’t throw it and knock someone unconscious, Jev.”
“I see,” Lornysh said. “You’ve irked Targyon, and he’s sacrificing you so he can hire new agent captains.”
“I admit I’d dismissed him, but maybe you were right,” Rhi said. “Maybe dating a man with substance would lead to a deeper and more meaningful relationship.” “If you’re referring to the beads of moisture on his chest, that’s sweat, not substance.”
“You’re fired, jackass,” Jev growled, then raced around him and toward the door. “I was appointed by Targyon,” Garlok snarled after him. “You can’t fire me.” “I just did. Go gossip about it to your cronies.”
“It’s not cowering if you lost half your bowels the night before and you’re convalescing,” Jev said. “My bowels are still intact,” Lornysh said, though it was clear from the stiff way he sat in the saddle that he was in discomfort. “Just slightly perforated,” Cutter added. “You were not there,” Lornysh told him. “I can tell when you’re looking perforated.”
“Use me for bait, then,” he said. “I am what they want. What he wants.” “Bait?” Jev asked. “You want me to dangle you from the castle wall by your wrists until they show up?” Lornysh touched his abdomen, his tunic hiding the bandage that had to still be there. “That sounds uncomfortable. Perhaps I could lie on a floating mat in your moat.”
“I’ll do as you wish, Jev,” she said. “That’s a good woman right there,” Cutter said. “You should make her something else, Jev.” “She’s wearing the necklace you helped me make.” “I see that. It’s pretty. But does she have a spice rack yet?” “She hasn’t requested one,” Jev said. “A woman shouldn’t have to request gifts. You have to be thoughtful and anticipate her needs.”
“It’s fine, Jev. I’ll stay. Just don’t get yourself killed without me.” “I wouldn’t dream of it. I definitely want you there if I’m going to get myself killed. So you can hold my head and kiss me as I lie dying.” “We already did something like that. I appreciated that you lived.” “I’m amenable to living. And finding a way to marry you.”
