as the amount of information available to the public increased, the authoritativeness of any one source decreased.
Information sources are considered authorities when they are one of the only sources available for us, but when, because of abundance, we have options about where we get our information, we also gain the ability to choose what we trust. No one source remains an authority, when they are just another option on a menu.
