Sometimes that’s all we needed, one friend rooting for us when we couldn’t root for ourselves any longer.
Raksha wheeled me inside before shutting the doors, and crouching in front of me. Leaning in, she grabbed both sides of my face and put her lips to my ear. “I was you once. In order to survive here, you have to play the bad girl. The Dark Prince wants to surround himself with the most evil beings alive. He doesn’t trust good or light, so you need to find that darkness. That darkness is what’s going to get you out of here alive.”
“Bernie? What the…?” I gestured to his wings. Was he a Celestial this entire time? His wings looked like they were made of light, not feather and bone like mine. “What are you?” I finally asked. Reaching out, he gently grasped my face in his hands. “I’m your guardian angel, Brielle. You were never alone down there, I just couldn’t reach you.”
The homeless man I’d thought I was taking care of all these years, was actually taking care of me?
He reached out a glowing hand and placed it on my chest, right over Lucifer’s devil mark. “I just want you to know that I heard every prayer, felt every ounce of pain and desperation, and I’m so incredibly proud of the woman you’ve become.”
“I forgot how passionate human soul mates are. It’s very endearing,” Gabriel said casually. Raphael froze, and Gabriel seemed to understand that he’d said too much.
Michael was grinning. He had a human wife and a daughter, so he knew exactly what I was talking about. “God help the person who tries to keep soul mates apart.” He was looking at Raphael.
“Brielle, I’ve dreamed of this day a thousand times, and now that it’s come… I fear I’m not the same man you left. Your disappearance… it changed me.” His voice was husky with emotion, and my heart picked up speed at his words. Stepping forward, I threw my arms around his neck. “Then I’ll fall in love with you all over again.”
“Highlight of my day was hearing Shea argue with Michael that he needed to get ordained online.”
“And I thought… wow. If this beautiful woman can get so angry so easily, I’d bet she loves just as fiercely.” He paused. “And she does.”
“By the online ministry power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife!”
