‘My dad used to say that he didn’t love my mum because she was perfect, he loved her because her imperfections were a good match for his. Like a lock and a key, he said. I guess I’m not exactly an expert, but it seems to me that perfection is hard to live with. I’d definitely need someone who could forgive my failings, and I’d feel a lot better about that if they had some I could forgive back.’
