I want to grow old with you, Jase. Every one of my tomorrows is yours.
I figured it out when you were here building the settlement. You two seemed inevitable.
The seer warned me about you. She said you were coming to cut out my heart. She spoke true. It didn’t hurt too much, now, did it? It hurt plenty. But I don’t want it back. It’s yours to keep—forever.
“Or what, Jase? What are you going to do? I am your brother!” My chest heaved. “And Kazi is my wife!”
Kazi of Brightmist … you are the love I didn’t know I needed.
“Very well, then. I not only have a new daughter, but one who has sacrificed everything to save our family. We must find a way to get my daughter and your wife back.”
“A thousand times over, Kazi,” I whispered. “I would marry you more than a thousand times.”
Synové’s brows pulled down defensively. “When opportunity knocks, you don’t go punching it in the face.”
“When opportunity knocks, you get nice and cozy with it, right?” Mason grimaced. “It’s not what you think—” “Come on, brother,” I said and put my hand on his shoulder. “Sit down. What you did was smart. Well, I assume most if it was, anyway.
Right now the only job I wanted was to be Kazi’s husband. A good one. A husband who only made the right decisions.
“Kazi of Brightmist … you are the love I didn’t know I needed. You are the hand pulling me through the wilderness, The sun warming my face. You make me stronger, smarter, wiser. You are the compass that makes me a better man. With you by my side, no challenge will be too great.
“So, what’s on the menu tonight?” Natiya asked, patting her stomach. Jase laughed. “Eating for two again?” She and Eben exchanged a glance and then I noticed that her waist had grown wider. She looked back at me and Jase. “Actually…”
the true reason they were going on to Terravin was that King Jaxon had promised he would take her back there one day, and she was holding him to it. Now was the perfect time. “It will be a romantic getaway, reliving our days together when we first fell in love.”
I opened my eyes and saw Mason approach Synové across the way. He appeared to speak a few words to her. She spoke a few back and then he took her hand and pulled her out to the clearing to dance. Their steps were hesitant, but slowly the space between them closed and Synové rested her head on his shoulder.
