I had to let her go for her own good. I had to let her memory go for mine.
“Have you ever become so tired you felt like you were running on autopilot? Like you go through every day in survival mode and you hope tomorrow is better?” I ask.
“Do you ever feel like there’s more for you out there? Like you love what you do and you find satisfaction in it, but like there’s something else you could be doing that’s important and you just can’t quite get there?”
“I just want to add that sometimes what we want in life changes, Neely. And that’s okay too.”
Neely isn’t someone I can gamble with. There’s no kissing and forgetting. There’s only wanting more. Needing more. Desiring more. And not being able to have it.
His features soften. “You’re what I want Mia to be.” My lips part. I can barely make him out through the tears in my eyes. “That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.”
Just as I’m bringing the fabric to my face, a set of strong arms wraps around me from behind. “I shouldn’t be doing this,” he mutters against the back of my head. “But fuck it if I can help it.”

“You can’t lump me in with them. We were different. You are why we didn’t work.” “Then. And you are why now.”
“I’ve wanted this my entire life, Dane. How am I supposed to not take a chance of a lifetime?” “This,” he says, motioning between us, “was what I’ve wanted my entire life. This was my chance of a lifetime.” “Don’t say that.” “You have your truth. I have mine.” He
“Do you want her to come back?” “Yes.” “Do you feel like your life will never be the same if she doesn’t?” “Yes.” I sigh. “Then go get the damn girl. At least try. Have you ever even tried before?”
“Dad said something smart for once,” I say. “He said life is not about what happens to you, but how you react to it. My reaction to you leaving is to come and get you because I don’t see another way to live without you by my side. And I know a little girl who thinks the world of you, and I’d be honored if you’d be a part of her life too.”
