It wasn't always the plan for Grey to be the secret heir, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would absolutely agonizing once Grey and Rhen realized how horrible it would be to know they were brothers trapped together for so long, especially since the rest of their siblings were gone due to Lilith.
