The is the piece of the plot that most resembles that of Star Trek VI. The director, Nicholas Meyer, seems to be a Sherlock Holmes fan. He wrote a 1974 novel, "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution: Being a Reprint from the Reminiscenses of John H. Watson, M.D.", made into a movie directed by Herbert Ross in 1976. Meyer is also a fan of H.G. Wells, whom he made into a real character in his own time travel movie from 1979, "Time After Time," starring Malcolm McDowell.
