We humans can try to imagine the world as rendered by sonar, just as we can try to imagine flying around in the dark, dining on insects, and spending our days sleeping upside down in the attic. As Nagel noted, however, this exercise “tells me only what it would be like for me to behave as a bat behaves. But that is not the question. I want to know what it is like for a bat to be a bat.”
