“Ollie.”
“I’ll see you again, right?” he said, and the endearing way he looked up at me then made me want to give him whatever he asked. And so I did. “You can count on it.”
“You’re the only person who feels familiar to me.”
“You want to be Bluebird?” “I thought I already was.”
“You’re crazy, you know that?” “Batshit bonkers,” I agreed, and then figured I’d pass along some Alice in Wonderland advice. “But all the best people are.”
With him, maybe I wouldn’t be so restless, and maybe with me, he wouldn’t be so frightened.
He was beautiful. So, so beautiful. And now I knew it wasn’t just the way he looked or the persona he’d put on every day; he was beautiful.
“Ollie? Is it always like this?” My arm tightened around him. “No, Bluebird. No, it’s never like this.”
Nothing and no one had ever fit me as perfectly as Reid Valentine, and I made a vow then to do whatever it took to keep him in my life. Happy. Healthy. Together.
“It reminds me of you. The way you feel. The way you make me feel.” He started the slow melody again from the top. “Safe…treasured…home.”
“When I wake up, I might not be me. I might not know you anymore.” His eyes glassed over. “And I like knowing you.”
“I’ll remember,” he said, his jaw set as his eyes met mine. “I swear I won’t forget you. I won’t forget any of it.” His hand squeezed mine so tight that my circulation was cut off. “I promise I’ll wake up to you.”
I just found you. I’m not losing you, and I won’t forget you, no matter what happens. But if, somehow, the worst-case scenario comes true, I need you to promise me you won’t give up on me. Help me remember. Help me find my way back to you. Love, Your Bluebird
