I have to live for me. I quit medicine. I quit. But I picture Maximoff Hale hurt, alone. In need of someone. And I know I’m not quitting today.
“Don’t be,” I say. “I’m supposed to be here.” Right here. Right now. This was my choice. I could’ve told my father no, but I said yes to this call. To Maximoff, and I’m not leaving until I’m sure he’s safe.
“Love is pain, and you know what…I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t met it yet.”
“Not everyone listens to me, by the way,” I tell him. He barely blinks. “I’d listen if you had better things to say.”
These four are the ones that see me less like Captain America and more like an imperfect human. I need them in my world. I can admit that.
“I’m willing to take a punch for Moffy. And for you and the rest of our family.”
He loves people so overwhelmingly, and he cares. Shit, he cares more than anyone, and when people need him to be their everything, he is always there. But it only makes me want to be there for him. Every time. Every day. Twice as hard. Ten times as much.
“When I love someone,” he says in a rough whisper, “I love them proudly, and you deserve the achingly normal, romantic shit more than anyone. Everything you’ve never had. All the pictures you post, all the videos you do on your own, I want to be in them—and it’d kill me not to give you that.
“Did your mom and I not teach you the art of being a couch potato? Jesus Christ, I’ve truly failed as a parent.”
For anyone else, maybe. For Xander, it’s a big deal that he took the energy to do something as minimal as cleaning his room.
“If you’re only fighting yourself on this because you love me,” he says, “I’m telling you to go. It’ll eat at you for the rest of your life if you don’t. So I need you to go.”
“You know, the hardest things are usually the right things.”
It sounds more like I’m your man. Not just any fucking man.”
My dad raised me to be like Ryke. Because he loved his brother more than he loved himself.
You’re giving me something so fucking precious: your chaotic, messy, bizarre-as-fuck family, and I also love them as they fucking are. Plus, I look forward to coming home and putting out wildfires with you. It’s not that complicated.”
He thinks he needs to give me peace and quiet away from the chaos. But I want everything that comes with him.
Connor is mental. He taught Maximoff intelligence, emotional restraint and confidence. Lo is emotional, the sarcastic, loving and empathetic pieces of him. And then Ryke is physical, all determination and stubbornness and unshakeable strength.
When he’s at peace, the entire world seems to still.
And he chose me to be here for it. Time and time again. He could’ve picked anyone in the entire world, and he wanted me.
“You have a big thing for ordinary shit, and I have a bigger thing for doing the ordinary shit with you.”
“It feels like every time I try to come up for air, someone else shits on you or me or us, and the only time I can breathe is when I’m looking at you.”
“But our love is that and better. Our love is headstrong. It never yields, never dies. And when it knocks you backwards, it pulls you upright again.”
And Maximoff—pure, wholehearted Maximoff—can’t even see how Lo and Ryke look even prouder to be next to him.
