“It’s the Forbidden Kingdom,” she says, squeezing my hand. “We must be brave.”
“Where are you?” I whisper now, sitting by her bedside. “Do you know what time it is?”
Shades of truth. That’s the legal system in action.
“This isn’t the end yet,” she says, softly. “We’re at the messy middle.”

It’s funny how life spins, how we go on for long stretches of time and nothing changes, and then all at once, in a single moment, everything is altered.
He says she can’t do that, but she said, literally, word for word, “Watch me, Mr. Loftis. Go ahead, make my day.”
“Whisper me truth, whisper me lies,” I murmur, Tony’s melody drifting through my mind. “All the things you did wrong, you did exactly right.”
