Then in 1976, planetary astronomers at a mountaintop observatory in Hawaii discovered the subtle spectral fingerprints of methane frost (frozen natural gas!) on Pluto’s surface.1 This provided the first evidence that Pluto’s surface is made out of truly exotic stuff.
