Machiavelli is careful to add: “so as not to take free will from us and that part of the glory that falls to us.” Wasn’t free will God’s idea? Wasn’t it supposed to lead to redemption, which would be glorious for those who achieved it? Questions like these, in Augustine’s thinking, had run up against his belief in God’s omnipotence: how could freedom exist in a predetermined world?
