FACING YOUR REACH OUT FEARS AND DETERMINING YOUR TARGETS
Finally, use these goals to brainstorm all the different people who could help you reach your goals: your potential Targets.
Next, let’s focus on your goals and the Targets who will be receiving your Reach Outs. Pulling from your Love/Don’t Love Career list, put into your plan two to four career goals you’d like to focus on in the next six months.
That emotion is the reason that you always begin your Reach Out with a gift. It is human nature to want to reciprocate
gift giving.

Gift #1: A Compliment
If you are having trouble thinking of something to compliment the Target on, put a Google alert (google.com/alerts) on their name or their company name.
that you are “in the know” with current industry trends or news.
Once the Target commits, whether it’s someone as famous as Sir Richard Branson or not, make sure the interview is kept short and conducted in whatever way the other party wants (over email, by phone, by video call, or in person). It’s also important to post the interview as quickly as possible so the momentum of the Reach Out doesn’t wear out.
The Favor is what you are asking the Target. Although every Reach Out email must have at least two Gifts, not every email needs to have a Favor—

THE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF ROs
And a just-for-fun Re-RO: On people’s actual birthday, their inbox is usually overwhelmed with emailed cards, retail birthday coupons, and more. The day after their birthday, rise to the top of the inbox with a Reach Out wishing them a great first full day of their new year.
The Three Hs and the Three Ls: Quick In-Person Networking Tips
To thank the connector, send two emails: one right after the connection is made to thank the connector for the connection and the other after you’ve communicated with the Target to let the connector know what became of the connection.

If the answer is yes to two or more of these questions, Reach Out on social media instead of sending an email.
Finally, although it’s not “required” for Cool ROs, I do encourage liking, commenting, or sharing the Target’s content on the platform before you message them privately for a Reach Out. Sharing people’s content is a good way to get on their radar before Reaching Out to them directly.

THE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF RESPONSES
For a phone call or video conference session, follow these tips:
If the person is open to setting up an in-person meeting, that’s also an exciting response. But remember to be smart here: unless it’s a Re-RO, keep both your personal and work physical addresses private to be safe to start. If someone asks you where you are located in order to determine a meeting place, using an approximate area is more than fine, and always meet in a public place while letting a friend know where you are going.
(Remember, when you send an RO every workday, you won’t have the time to focus on all the different emails you’ve sent, so the email response anxiety decreases.)
