Grace’s girls came down to Perdido that summer as in the past, but the time was tinged with melancholy. Already some of the girls were engaged, and it was obvious to them all that these happy months of laughter and company could never be repeated. This summer, Grace’s girls paid particular attention to Frances, who seemed frailer than ever, after her bout with arthritis two years before.
