There’s also something deeply worrisome about Facebook assigning users an identity on the back end, while not allowing those same users to select their own identity in the front end of the system, says Safiya Noble, the information studies scholar we heard from back in Chapter 1. “We are being racially profiled by a platform that doesn’t allow us to even declare our own race and ethnicity,” she told me. “What does that mean to not allow culture and ethnicity to be visible in the platform?”
Why do people want to declare their identity for things that aren’t visible to others on the network? This is really just data for advertisers’ purposes...I guess and to assert that many women do like technology, but should we feel responsible for correcting big tech so that we get this right, ant the same time enriching big tech’s data and profits?
There should be a way to tell advertisers that google/fb got it wrong so that it reflects the true value of the data (and all flaws therein)...and maybe give advertisers an excuse to claw back some of their money back from fb, goog.
