The thought was like grease on the stuck gears of his brain, and suddenly all his anxiety of the past few weeks, his fear, his nameless yearning, made sense. He wanted that. He wanted to do that, to be that so badly! His skin itched and his muscles trembled with tiny sparks of lightning. He shut his eyes, letting the sensations fall upon him, reached for them—
"That one." He pointed to Sammy. "He won't like you," Edith warned. Rav snorted. "Neither does my family, but no one's putting them down. Get him out of that fucking cage."
Lance wandered over. "But he's not. So when are you heading out?" They all stood around Rav, waiting for his answer. Not in an unfriendly way. Well, except for Lance, who was unfriendly on steroids.
"Yes, thank you!" chorused another ten people. And then they all said it. "Thank you! Thank you so much! Thank you!" Their faces were so eager. A few butts shimmied with delight. Rav had a sense of déjà vu. He flashed to walking into his play yard and seeing all his dogs bound up to him with wagging tails. We gonna play? Play now? Throw ball? Is there a ball? Food? Is there food?

He slowly made his way to the front door of the shelter. It was like walking through a mob scene in an old movie, only instead of pitchforks, you might get loved to death. They were a ragtag lot, their clothes often missized, worn, and stained. But damn, he'd never seen so many happy and appealing faces.

All through that long, hot August, he learned so much from Rav. Some things Rav showed him, like how to change a light bulb or clip a dog's nails. But Sammy also learned by watching Rav. He was learning so fast, it felt to Sammy as though he was made out of dry dust, and he was soaking in rain, more and more, and it was filling him up and bringing him to life.

God, he was changing so rapidly. It was a little, Rav imagined, like having a child. Parents were always saying things like "He's growing so fast!" Only in Sammy's case, it wasn't his body, but his mind and behavior that were changing, and at lightning speed.
