Jesus, however, says that people’s presumed hurtfulness toward Helen is actually irrelevant. “It does not matter whether the people you think have hurt you have really thought hurtfully.” What matters, he says, is that she has thought hurtfully of them. That is what has really hurt her. And that is why it is so urgent that she give them miracles. By doing so, she will not only be healing them, she will also be wiping away her own past lovelessness, through which she had injured herself.
