The first is Exodus 23:28–30. A long while before the Israelites violently invaded the land that Yahweh wanted them to live in, he promised them that he would “send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites out of your way.” But, he added, he would “not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you.” Rather, he says, he would “drive them out . . .
