But once I’d robbed a place it meant nothing to me. I forgot about it. I never realised that I was leaving such fear behind.

When I was young my parents home was broken into and I can still remember how that felt, running into my room to see what had been stolen.

I have no idea why that seems to be what people think of as a short shower, I’ve never had long ones unless it comes to washing hair or cleaning while I’m in it and I can’t understand how people can just stand in there.

Kim nodded, and watched the veil of disinterest that closed over the woman’s face like a Roman blind. Kim understood the look. It represented much of the population. Prostitutes were less deserving of the rights allowed to other citizens. Somehow they were to blame for their own fate, even if that fate was a brutal, horrifying death. Most people would not voice the thought that slipped into the minds of ‘good people’. That she should be working on other cases; solving crimes committed against the worthy. Good people would not say it but the thought would be there nonetheless. A fire fighter ...more
Violet
And those thoughts and ideals are from the minds of people who grew up if in not perfect families, at least normal, average, where they have the luxury of schooling, a stable home, loving parents, friends, etc etc, but take all of that, and more, away from a child, and you’ve been put onto a track that’s got a long dark tunnel with no light at the end, until that’s all you’ve got, the end.

A nice-looking house was not indicative of the life inside. Unhappiness, misery and abuse were not the sole property of the poor and disadvantaged.
Violet
Very true, the old adage that no one knows what goes on behind closed doors, and it can behind a closed door in the same house. Note use of house, not home.

Have to wonder if her father had abused her, and if when he died, instead of feeling saved, she instead felt dirty, finally given a way to look at a future without the abuse, she wondered who was going to want her, maybe the drugs had already become part of her life, maybe not, but after this they did.
