Beckett and I were going to get married.
Talk about a marriage of convenience.
I’m sorry I’m not Emily, I thought. I’m sorry this is happening. I’m sorry you have to pay for it because I’m broke. Thank you for saving me. Thanks for putting your broken heart on hold so I have a place to live.
“My wife, ladies and gentlemen,” he said, doing a ta-da gesture toward me.
“Good. Come on, wifey.”
“Not, like ‘Nebraska was really flat’ nervous, but you know.”
“I should un-marry you.”
“Whatever you say, wifey.” “Stop that.” “Yes, dear.”
“This ring is called a Semi-Eternity ring!”
“All right, come on, hubs. Let’s go make like we like each other.”
“Ow,” he said. “Ease up there, killer.” “Sorry.” I sank back to my feet. “I’m just so hot for you.”
“I’m not leaving you, Mrs. Anderson.” “I’m not an Anderson.” “We can’t all be perfect.”
“It’s okay, baby, I’ve got you,” he said softly.
“I’m happy, Em.”
He stood and crossed the room in three strides before he captured my face in his hands and kissed me.
“I want you to be happy.” He smiled. “Then shut up and kiss me.”
“No, fuck it. I’m done dancing around this. Emmy, I’m in love with you.”
I’m in fucking love with you, and I want to be with you, and you make me really god damn happy, and if it’s just me, then I guess that’s gonna have to be how it is, because I can’t change it, and I’m really fucking tired of hiding it. I’m in love with you, okay?”
“I’m in love with you, too.”
“If you play your cards right, maybe someday I’ll give you a ring that didn’t come from Walmart.”
“There you go, making me fall in love with you all over again.”
