This is much more realistic dialogue. Black humor, dry wit, is ever present with those engaged in close combat. It's not about keeping fear in check so much, as controlling, channeling anger and the adrenaline rush.
Kaspowitz told the younger man, somewhat patronisingly.
This whole line of "attitudinal insubordination," or at least insolence, that is exhibited towards the captain by his executive officers, bridge officers, and marine contingent C.O., is rapidly eroding the storyline. No warship's C.O., or in fact, ANY C.O., would be accepting of this breakdown of command authority. Mr. Shepherd, is fully off base.
