Fear is a handicap. It was invented to fill the weak spots in the soul, and heaven knows I’m riddled with weaknesses. But that’s okay. I won’t let it control my actions. Fear is just a visitor, stopping by to remind me to be stronger.
“You didn’t just save my life.” I press closer, brushing our lips together. “You gave me life when I had nothing left to live for. Thank you.”
“Don’t apologize, Danni Angelo.” His timbre is quiet, shaky. “I gave you my heart. It was always yours to break.”
“Where’s My Love by SYML. I heard it the other day. Made me think of you.”
“The most decisive actions are the ones with the least consideration.”
“I lost you, baby. I lost you the morning I got into that cab and left you crying on the porch.” He pulls me against him, his embrace constricting and his mouth at my ear. “I’m not giving up. I’m letting you go.”
The memory of his dimpled smile will be my secret indulgence when I’m sad. His deep breaths will be the soundtrack to the story of us. And his lips on my forehead will be the very last thing I feel before I fall asleep.
He was right. When I fall in love, I never fall out. And neither does he. I know with every anguished breath, he will always love me.
“You’re the realization clawing at my insides without coercion or doubt or the pressure of time. My heart beats for you and only you, not because you command it, but because we’re meant to be.”
“If you still love me, even after I broke your heart, that’s not a weakness. It’s bravery.”
“I will always, always love you.” I kiss him again. “Down to the very depths of you. Thank you for showing me how to smile again.”
He stares at me as I stare at him, suspended in a moment as defining as the day we met. Our story began and ended with a smile, every second in between marked with love.
