“You don’t have to say it.” He brushes my hair from my face. “You look at me and see one of two choices. I look at you and see absoluteness. But we have time. Someday, we’ll look beyond the question marks and just see us.”
“Don’t apologize, Danni Angelo.” His timbre is quiet, shaky. “I gave you my heart. It was always yours to break.”
He’s not the first man I loved or the first love I lost. But his is the love that cuts the deepest and does the most damage.
I know from experience a broken heart doesn’t mend in four months. It doesn’t mend until a cure comes along. Like new love.
“It doesn’t matter.” I climb onto his lap, desperate to hold him. “I love you. “I know you do.” He folds his arms around me, pulling my chest against his and tucking my head beneath his chin. “But you love him more.”
“I gave my heart away a long time ago.” Months of regret retreat under the raw affection in his voice. “I’m taken in every way.”
