Sophie bit back a smile. “Actually . . . we do wear capes—but not because of that.”
“And yet I sure seem to see a lot of Keefe these days. . . .” Sophie scowled. Sandor coughed. Grady shrugged.
He flicked the ends of his ears with an uncharacteristically wide smile, and Sophie tried to understand how he could be the same elf who’d scowled at her with the rage of a thousand suns when Fitz first brought her to Everglen and she’d gaped at the same pointed protrusions.
Bronte has most DEFININTELY changed. I think it is amazing that he is LAUGHING at his Ancient ears, when a few years back he started hating Sophie just because the new creatures and world she stepped into interested her, how they looked interested her. Bronte could never have been meaner...and now he's..nice? Honestly, when Sophie thought there was a leak in the Council to the Neverseen, Bronte would have been my first guess. But I thought Terik was kinda suspicious. I mean, out of the blue, he said " Hey Sophie If you need my help with anything, I will do my best to help." This guy was like a complete stranger to her! But enough about Terik's suspiciousness. Let's get back to the story.
“For what it’s worth,” Fitz whispered, “I’ll be hoping you decide to register.”
Yeesh. Okay, Fitz. Could you make it LESS obvious that you like her?! He probably wants Sophie on his first match maker list. Here is what I think: All the boys like Sophie. Dex DOES. It's obvious that Fitz does. And it is kinda obvious that Keefe does. (There is a lot of hand-holding between Sophie and Keefe). But...I don't think Tam likes her. And I also think that all the girls like Fitz. Sophie, YES. Linh? Yeah, I think so. But for the record, Biana likes Keefe (but she wouldn't LIKE her own brother, so...she dosen't really count, 'cuz if she did...GROSS!)
There. I rest my case.
Even with the worries ticking away in her head—and even with the pressure of finals already looming—there
Sophie has to worry about finals-and about a million other things. I'm worried about a huge test at my school next week, so I should be grateful I don't have to worry about other things like Sophie. But...of course, I am worried about Covid...
“Not the revenge I meant, Bangs Boy,” Keefe said with an enormous eye roll. “I meant revenge for what happened to his mom. Wylie could act like he thinks my mom killed Cyrah—it’s not like it’s a stretch, since I’m still not convinced she didn’t do it. And he could say he went to the Black Swan for help and we refused, because we’re working with her. So now he’s going to the other side to see if they’ll take her down for him, and offering the secrets as a trade.” “I actually could see them believing that,” Mr. Forkle admitted. “So could I,” Granite mumbled. “Though I’m sure they’d still be
...more
That is actuslly a pretty solid plan. But, the Neverseen aren't dumb enough that EVERY SINGLE one of them would go to the meeting with Wylie. At least ONE of them could stay at the hideout...but Sophie and her friends can take down one of the Neverseen...so ya! It's a solid plan!
“Okay,” Mr. Forkle said, clapping his hands, “that leaves us with a group of two goblins, an ogre, a Telepath, an Empath, a Vanisher, a Shade, a Hydrokinetic, a Technopath, a Mesmer, and a Pyrokinetic—and of course Miss Foster’s Telepath-Polyglot-Teleporter-Inflictor-Enhancer combination.” Ro blinked. “Wow. Now I get why everyone’s always trying to kill her.”
Telepath is Fitz, Empath is Keefe, Vanisher is Biana, Shade is Tam, Hydrokinetic is Linh, Technopath is Dex, Mesmer is Grady, Pyrokinetic is Marella, and the Telepath-Polyglot-Teleporter-Inflictor-Enhancer is (who else) Sophie.
They were just two girls from two different worlds.
