Nobel-Memorial winner Joseph Stiglitz, to assess the measures of economic and social progress that currently guide policymaking. On surveying the state of indicators in use they came to a blunt conclusion: ‘Those attempting to guide the economy and our societies,’ they wrote, ‘are like pilots trying to steer a course without a reliable compass.’22 None of us want to be passengers on that directionless jet.
