“I’m dropping off some homework for a friend.” I hold up the folder, then flip it open so that my nosy stepsister can see there’s real schoolwork in there. “At eight o’clock at night?” I mock gasp. “Eight o’clock?! Holy fuck! It’s so late! We should turn in!”
We’re southerners, for chrissake. You’re invited inside and insulted over a glass of sweet tea and a slice of cake. Doors are not slammed in your face.
That sounds like a nightmare. I can’t imagine my dad monitoring all the toxins I put in my body. There’d be too many of them for him to keep up with.
“You looked thirsty,” I announce. She looks up from her work. “Oh really?” “Really.” I stretch out on the lounger. “And it also looks like you’re due for a break.” Ella laughs. “Actually, I just sat down.” “Perfect. Then I’m not interrupting anything yet. Let’s dish, girlfriend.”
The twins, I don’t know where they are. Maybe upstairs with Lauren. I’m sure one of them is fanning her while the other feeds her grapes.
