Some people will have a mix of answers. I’ve been a VP of Engineering and a CTO, both times via promotion. I was always thinking about the technical architecture, but when my job required it I was happy to focus on the organization. For me, though, having only an organizational focus is not enough to keep me motivated. I like to think about organizational structure, but I get bored with the details of process and roadmap planning, and need to have some technical and business strategy oversight to be engaged.
