We have encountered quite a few organizational setups in which managers claimed their teams were autonomous, when in reality the teams were micromanaged, with endless product reviews and corrections from all parts of the company (also called “product management by committee”). It can be really hard for managers to leave teams alone. But for a specific and measurable outcome (like “increase number of page views by x%”), the team should have the freedom to design the solution.
