It was a coming historical catastrophe, probably not yet inevitable, that would result from the combination of Rome’s imperial needs and insensitivity to the cultural direction of his own people. Like an Old Testament prophet (to whom he was compared by his contemporaries), Jesus criticized the present path and threatened destruction if it did not change.
