If you do a quick Google search on this topic, you will find that some hateful people still believe—today!—that the bubonic plague was deliberately spread by Jews poisoning wells. That rumor, though medically implausible, is apparently sufficiently compelling to continue to appeal to poorly informed people. So it is horrifying but not wholly unexpected that in February 1349, nine hundred Jews were burned to death in Strasbourg.
